BLOOMING FROM SHADOW

Black is not the absence of color.

It can be rich, warm, cool, transparent, matte, textured, mysterious, and sometimes…dead..

Today we’ll explore how darkness can become the stage for light and color. Through value, glazing, layering, and restraint, we’ll discover how a strong dark can make everything around it more luminous.

BRING TODAY

• Your regular watercolor supplies

• Your in-progress calla lily painting

• Extra watercolor paper to play with Black

• Sketchbook or notebook if you are taking notes

• One painting of your own that might benefit from a stronger or deeper background

The paint you bring can be finished, unfinished, successful, or frustrating. Bring something that left you wondering “Could this painting tell a better story, or just WORK, if I let the shadows speak louder?” Note: this doesn’t have to just be the background; darks can lie in the mid and foreground as well.

AFTERNOON: BLOOMING FROM SHADOW

Our three days of exploration come together.

We’ll deepen the foundational washes, selectively glaze, refine edges, and carve away the shadows around our lilies until the petals emerge from the dark.

WHO? This class is perfect for the beginning artist, or the artist with experience who wants to slow down and loosen up…we’re going step by step, together.

All supplies are available to rent for just $30 for the workshop—simply let me know when you register. You can walk in worry-free; everything you need will be provided. My goal is to equip you with tools that support your growth as an artist. I understand that not every technique or style is the right fit for everyone, so this is a chance to try things out and see what resonates. If you love it, you can add those supplies to your own studio collection.
