PLANTING THE SEED OF STORY
Before pigment touches paper, every painting begins with intention.
Today we’ll explore how memory, emotion, experience, and personal meaning shape the choices we make as artists. We’ll look at how light, texture, color, contrast, value, edges, and composition guide the viewer—and how a subject becomes a story when it carries meaning.
BRING TODAY
Your watercolor supplies
Extra watercolor paper for little tests (bring paper you frequently use!)
Sketchbook or notebook if you are taking notes
One or two meaningful images that inspire you
Choose images that not only caught your attention, but have something meaningful that you want to capture and share—perhaps a photograph you’ve been sitting on for a long time because you love the memory, or feeling, but have always thought, “It’s not good enough to paint.” Let’s see if we can find the pieces to make it a great painting.
AFTERNOON: THE CALLA LILY
We’ll take the calla lily through the STORY lens, making intentional choices about what we want the painting to communicate.
Then we’ll create our drawing based on our story decisions—starting not just with what we see, but with what we want to say.
WHO? This class is perfect for the beginning artist, or the artist with experience who wants to slow down and loosen up…we’re going step by step, together.

All supplies are available to rent for just $30 for the workshop—simply let me know when you register. You can walk in worry-free; everything you need will be provided. My goal is to equip you with tools that support your growth as an artist. I understand that not every technique or style is the right fit for everyone, so this is a chance to try things out and see what resonates. If you love it, you can add those supplies to your own studio collection.
